The Annual Gladwyn Lecture 2018

The Windrush Generation & Lost Educational Opportunities: How can the Commonwealth Learn from this?

Speaker: The Rt Hon David Lammy MP

Chair: Sonny Leong CBE, Chair, Council for Education in the Commonwealth

The many forms of disadvantage and discrimination faced by the Windrush Generation have been brought to the fore this year, particularly as a result of David Lammy's powerful campaign. However, over the last 60 years these once welcomed immigrants and their families have faced real challenges in achieving equality of access to education and at all levels of provision.

Many of these difficulties are mirrored in the experiences of other migrants, refugees and internally displaced communities wherever they might be located, with millions involved in other Commonwealth countries. David Lammy will provide background and some powerful messages to stimulate discussion and consider ways forward on these crucially important topics; this very much based on his own deep involvement with identifying and seeking solutions to the challenges faced by immigrants in the UK and elsewhere.

David Lammy has been the Labour Member of Parliament for his home constituency of Tottenham since 2000. He has held Ministerial posts including Higher Education, Health and Culture and is a member of the Privy Council. David was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1994, practised as a barrister in England and the United States and became the first black Briton to study a Masters degree in Law at Harvard Law School. In addition to the Windrush, he has been greatly involved in other campaigns, particularly for Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities, including on behalf of the Grenfell Tower survivors, improving access to leading universities and treatment in the judicial system.
