On Wednesday 12 March we received a special visit to our new offices from Her Majesty The Queen, and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. The occasion was a joint visit to their respective charities as we are now co-habiting with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation. Her Majesty listened to a presentation on our education programmes, met a former Essay Competition winner, and took the time to talk to all of the staff.

The visit provided a space to reflect on the transformative changes that the past year has seen within the Royal Commonwealth Society. Moving offices very much symbolises a new beginning, and the past 12 months have certainly been spent re-evaluating our purpose, our goals and aspirations.

The infographic pictured is on the wall in our office, and serves as a reminder to us about these goals and aspirations. It is immediately obvious that the globe is not represented in the usual way. Instead it shows the route that Her Majesty’s Baton Relay has taken across the Commonwealth on its way to Glasgow for the Games this summer. While reflecting recent RCS activities by region, the boards also suggest a new way of looking at the ties that bind the Commonwealth together. With our new International Network, we look forward to celebrating these ties and increasing our positive interaction across the Commonwealth regions.

Her Majesty The Queen signed a photograph for the Society which will be displayed in our office, and, with The Duke of Edinburgh, unveiled two plaques for the two organisations to commemorate the occasion.
