Young Commonwealth Competitions
The RCS has a rich history of nurturing the creative talents of young people around the Commonwealth through a range of competitions. In 2010, these competitions are being run as one exciting awards scheme for the very first time.

With writing, film and photography categories, our 'Young Commonwealth Competitions' are open to anybody under the age of 30 living in the Commonwealth. They encourage creative responses to to global challenges and offer a unique international platform for new young talent...

Explore our website, find out more and enter these unique creative awards!

What's happening in 2010?

The Commonwealth theme for 2010 is 'Science, Technology and Society' and we are inviting entrants into our Competitions to explore this topic. Entrants can submit ONE entry into each of the categories – Essay (for under 18s only), Film and Photography.

Click on the links on the left hand side of this page for full details of each Competition and how to enter.

Note: For the Essay Competition, entrants must respond to one of the listed 'TenTopics'. For the Vision and Photographic Awards, entrants do not need to respond to one of these topics - you are free to interpret the Science, Technology and Society theme as you wish (although, if you need some inspiration, the Essay Topics might not be a bad place to start!).

Closing Dates:

Essay Competition 1st May 2010

Photographic Awards 1st June 2010

Vision Awards 1st July 2010

Online applications are encouraged, although postal entries will be accepted to ensure that young people from all parts of the Commonwealth can participate. Please do not send your entry by email.

We are seeking sponsorship to fly the top winners of each Competition to London where they will:

  • take part in expert workshops with leading figures in their creative field
  • meet famous authors, film directors, and photographers at a Gala Awards Ceremony held in central London's Commonwealth Club
  • visit the BBC's global headquarters, Buckingham Palace, the Commonwealth Secretariat and other high-profile venues in the UK's capital city
  • see their work exhibited in different locations around London and featured in the press worldwide
  • attend a show in London's West End and take part in drama workshops
