GreenHouse: A Commonwealth Climate Challenge gives 12 households in each of 12 cities in 12 countries across the Commonwealth 12 months to reduce their environmental impact. As they take up the challenge, we will share their stories to inspire and inform people about environmental issues

What are the project aims?
GreenHouse is a fun project with serious aims. We want to:
- Build a sense of shared responsibility across the Commonwealth for action on sustainability
- Build knowledge of how to encourage environmentally sustainable behaviour across different contexts and countries
- Build capacity within and across the network of participating countries to strengthen the pan-Commonwealth voice on environmental issues
What will we be doing with the householders?
- We will calculate household baselines using existing data and a 'carbon calculator' designed for the project
- We will carry out a household audit and hold briefing days to provide guidance on reducing environmental impact
- We will monitor electricity consumption using clever real time display units
- We will set monthly challenges to help householders address different areas of their environmental impact
- Householders will share their stories through diaries, photos and video blogs uploaded on our website
- We will award community prizes to the households which achieve the greatest proportional reduction in carbon emissions and perform best in the monthly challenges
How will GreenHouse encourage a Commonwealth Greenup?
- Beginning at grassroots, each household will begin to understand and reduce its environmental impact
- Through local media and schools engagement, the 12 households will begin to inspire their city and region to adopt more sustainable behaviours
- A network of households, partner organisations and city authorities will compare and share experiences, building a sense of global responsibility for reducing environmental impact
- Built from the bottom up, and supported by real life examples, an evidence base and network will be created to hold the Commonwealth to account on its environmental stewardship responsibilities
A dedicated GreenHouse website will be launched in September 2010. To find out more in the meantime, please contact Helen Vincent on +44 (0) 20 7766 9240 or email helen.vincent@thercs.org
