"It is encouraging to see that so many Trinidad and Tobago students are able to articulate their country's role in world affairs so powerfully. We hope visiting leaders take the opportunity to read some of these wonderful essays and learn about Trinidad and Tobago." Dr Danny Sriskandarajah, Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society.

Trinidad & Tobago CHOGM Essay Competition
Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Essay Competition 2009
November 2009 saw the Commonwealth descend upon Trinidad & Tobago for the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Hundreds of people from all around the world gathered in Port of Spain to discuss global issues and challenges affecting their own countries.
The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) has run a global Essay Competition for over 100 years inspiring thousands of young people to write about issues that interest them, giving them a voice and celebrating creative talent. For the first time ever, working with the National Secretariat in Trinidad and to coincide with the CHOGM, the RCS held a special prize for young writers in T&T asking them to write to visiting Commonwealth leaders about "What can Trinidad and Tobago Teach the World?" The letters produced are a demonstration of the literacy, imagination and pride of young writers from T&T who had the chance to share their voice with foreign leaders from all corners of the world.
The young Trinidadians who took part can be rightly proud of their achievements. Well over 200 essays were received of a superb quality and, from these, 20 writers were selected to come to Port of Spain on the 26th November to be involved in the very heart of the CHOGM sessions…
