FOR TEACHERS AND YOUTH LEADERS

The Commonwealth Youth Summits project is a unique debate programme. Run by the RCS and funded by DFID, it brings to life key international issues such as poverty, education and health for young people across the British Isles.

Summits will take place in 12 cities over the course of 3 years (2010-13). At each event, 120 diverse 14-17 year olds will come together from schools and youth groups across the region.

During a mock Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, participants will play the roles of Prime Ministers, Presidents, Foreign Ministers and journalists. Developing political literacy and public speaking skills, they will explore today's big international issues and the idea of global interdependence.

Participants will then elect representatives to attend a National Commonwealth Youth Summit in London, to meet with other young people from across the country and take their ideas forward to leaders from the UK Government and the Commonwealth.

Participation in the Summits is free and accommodation and travel costs will be covered for those attending the National event.

Exciting new resources are being developed to help participants prepare for the project.

Specially developed Teacher and Youth Leader sessions will also be held at the Summits, providing inspiration and practical ideas for incorporating active Global Citizenship into your ongoing work.

The RCS is delighted to be working in partnership with Oxfam, the Commonwealth Secretariat and other local partners to ensure a sustainable, long-term impact of the project.
