The participants

The 29 Nkabom 2008 participants represented 28 countries and 6 continents. Between them, they spoke 27 different languages and practiced all of the world's major religions. They came from Sri Lanka and South Africa, from Malta and Mauritius, Sierra Leone, Singapore and beyond. Some came from vast countries such as Canada and Australia. Others from tiny islands like Vanuatu, Jersey or Cyprus itself.

Despite these differences, the participants all had the upheaval of conflict in common. Some were all too familiar with the sight of soldiers and the dull echo of bombs falling across their neighbourhoods. Some had lost family and friends – young, like them – through war. Others came from places where conflict is frozen, or where it is more quietly pervasive: where racist taunts, terrorist threats, domestic violence and gang disputes make people afraid. Sadly, they were all too aware that conflict existed everywhere they lived.

Yet all were united by a belief that young people can overcome social injustice and be powerful agents for change.
