Lively - and sometimes controversial - events with Dr Mahathir Mohamad and President Nasheed of the Maldives have attracted large audiences to the RCS in recent weeks. Coming up, don't miss an exploration of the Caribbean-EU EPA with the key players who shaped the deal, as Africa and Pacific states look to enter similar agreements.

Please note also that FW de Klerk's speech in early May is almost fully booked - be sure to contact us soon to avoid disappointment!

Mahathir Mohamad

Mahathir Mohamad slams failed banks

"When you don't have money, you behave like a poor person. You don't go out and borrow and spend."

Speaking at the RCS on the eve of the G20, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad called for the the closure of banks that caused the global financial crisis and lambasted the West for pumping billions of dollars into these "failed institutions". The former Prime Minister of Malaysia criticised bankers for "rewarding themselves with fat bonuses rather than being punished for their inefficiencies". "If they must dole out money, give it to the people who suffered actual losses due to the banks' failure, but not to the bankers", he said.

Unafraid to criticise governments and bankers alike, Mahathir's lively analysis of the financial crisis drew laughter and applause from the gathered audience.

New Maldives President heralds democracy

"Democracy, I believe, is the best antidote to extremism."

After 30 years of authoritarian rule, the newly elected President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, was keen to emphasise the merits of his country's burgeoning democracy when he spoke at the RCS on 8 April.

"It is our firm belief that the way to a tolerant and liberal Maldives - indeed the way to counter the narratives of extremists that seek to destroy our way of life - is not through the bullet or the bomb but through the ballot box," he said.

Fiercely optimistic, yet refusing to shy away from addressing the problems which remain to be tackled, Nasheed cited Islamic fundamentalism, an increasing heroin epidemic and gang violence as just some of the challenges still to be met.
